National forest inventory

It is conducted every year by sampling methods, combining measuring on permanent and temporary plots and their assessment by satellite maps as well as aerial photos. Thus, a precise and effective information on the condition of forests, harvesting and regeneration, volume of growing stock, mortality increment, their balance, structure, use for strategical forest planing, and forestry regulation on a state level is obtained.

In 1996 experiments were done. In 1997 a sampling design and allocation scheme of plots all over Lithuanian forests was worked out. Measuring was started.
