History
Lithuanian forest inventory and management planning
started January 1,1922 after the forest management department has been
established at the Ministry of Agriculture.
Up to 1936 the standwise forest inventory has been carried out
on the total area Lithuanian state forest (867 000 ha).

1945-1990 - Forest Inventory and Management Institute (FIMI) was subordinated
to All Union association “LESPROJEKT” in Moscow.

1946-1950 - the first post-war standwise inventory, 1 300 000 ha

1950 - implementing areal fotography.

1955-1957 - standwise forest inventory in the collective and state farms,
552 000 ha.

1958-1963 the second post war inventory , 1 698 000 ha.

1959 - starting forest soil description.

1960-1962 - estimating current growth on the stand level.

1966-1977 - the third post war inventory, site types classification, as a
basis for the forest inventory and for the planning of silvicultural measures,
has been introduced, 1 729 000 ha.

1978-1987 - the fourth post - war forest inventory, 1 878 000 ha. A complete
data base of forest has been introduced.

1988 - the fifth post war inventory started.

1990 - Lithuania regained its independence. FIMI started to work under Lithuanian
Ministry of Foresty.

1991 - land reform started. FIMI takes an active part in the land restitution
process.

1995 - forest mapping based on GIS was introduced.

1997 - national forest inventory by sampling methods started.
